Most gardeners see weeds as a nuisance, but in many ways, weeds are actually messengers of your soil's health. They are often the first plants to appear in disturbed or struggling soils, and the species that show up can tell you a surprising amount about what is happening beneath the surface.

Instead of viewing weeds as enemies, it can be helpful to see them as indicators of soil health.

Nature rarely leaves bare soil exposed for long, and common garden weeds are often pioneer plants. Their role is to stabilize soil, protect it from erosion, pull nutrients from deep underground, and begin rebuilding biological life.
