Hiring a landscape designer is an exciting first step toward transforming your outdoor space but finding the right designer can make all the difference between a garden that simply looks nice and one that truly feels uniquely yours.

Here are a few tips from a professional landscape designer on things to consider when finding a designer who’s the right fit for you and your landscape.

Start with the Feeling

Before reaching out to a designer, take a moment to imagine how you want your space to feel when you're in it. Do you want a food forest overflowing with fruit and herbs? A calm sanctuary full of pollinator plants and soft textures? A simplistic modern landscape or low-maintenance garden that is lush and alive?

Knowing the feeling you're trying to cultivate will help you find someone who speaks that design language and can translate your goals into a living landscape.

Look for Alignment in Values

Every designer has their own unique philosophy for example at Garden Alchemist, my work is rooted in ecological design, permaculture principles, and creating visually beautiful landscapes that benefit the natural world. If you’re drawn to sustainable systems, native plants, edible landscapes, and gardens that work with nature instead of against it, we’ll likely be a great fit.

Some designers are solely focused on particular aesthetics such as Japanese or zen, formal gardens, modern gardens or xeriscaping. Its important to find a designer who's aesthetic aligns with the feeling you're trying to cultivate.

Ask About Their Process

A good designer doesn’t just tell you what should go in your landscape and hand you a plan (unless that's what you want). They should collaborate with you to create a space that's something unique and meaningful to you.

When working with clients, I start with an on-site consultation to understand the client's needs and see how those can be translated into the landscape. From there, I develop moodboards that convey the feeling the client wants to cultivate and share multiple conceptual designs for the client to choose from, making it a very collaborative experience between homeowner and designer.

Clear communication and shared decision-making should be at the heart of the design process.

Understanding Budget and Timeline

A designer should be realistic and transparent about costs both within the design process and of the landscape they create. Whether you want a full professional installation, a more phased approach, or a design catered to a DIY installation, your designer should help you get the most value out of your investment.

Trust Your Gut

The best designs come from a relationship built on trust and shared inspiration. Choose a designer who listens deeply, understands your priorities, and helps you feel excited about the process. When you feel that spark of creative connection, that’s a great sign you’ve found the right fit.

The right landscape designer doesn’t just design for you, they design with you.

At Garden Alchemist, my goal is to create visually beautiful, ecologically beneficial spaces that support your lifestyle, nurture local biodiversity, and grow richer over time. If that sounds like the kind of garden you’re dreaming of, I’d love to connect and see if I'm the right landscape designer for you.
