How Native Plants Increase Wildfire Resilience

One of the most effective solutions to increasing wildfire resilience in our own yards is surprisingly simple: planting native species. Native plants have evolved alongside local climate conditions, soils, wildlife, and natural disturbance patterns like wildfires for thousands of years. Because they are adapted to our region, many native species require less water, less fertilizer, and less maintenance than introduced or ornamental species. These characteristics often translate into healthier landscapes that are more resilient during periods of drought and wildfire.
Simply put, native plants are better adapted to local conditions.

Fire is a natural part of many ecosystems. Historically, low-intensity fires helped shape portions of British Columbia's landscapes, and many native plants have evolved strategies that allow them to withstand and recover after fire.
Some species quickly resprout from roots or underground stems after being burned, while others rely on fire-related disturbance to germinate from seed. Many quickly recolonize disturbed areas, helping stabilize soil while providing food and habitat for wildlife. This ability to naturally withstand and recover from low-intensity wildfires contributes to the long-term resilience of natural and garden landscapes.
Species such as Oregon Grape, Oceanspray, Red Flowering Currant, Kinnikinnick, Nootka Rose, and Roemer's Fescue have evolved to survive the region's natural fire season and often continue functioning well with minimal intervention. Most ornamental plants require significant irrigation to remain healthy through our increasingly dry summers. When stressed by drought, they become more susceptible to disease, pest problems, and dieback. Dead branches, dry foliage, and accumulated debris can all increase wildfire risk in our landscapes.
Native Plants Increase Wildfire Resilience by Supporting Healthy Ecosystems and Producing Less Hazardous Fuel Loads
Wildfire resilience is not simply about individual plants or mulch choices. It is about creating healthy ecosystems. Native plants support pollinators, birds, beneficial insects, fungi, and soil microorganisms that all contribute to ecosystem health. These relationships improve soil structure, increase organic matter, and help soils retain moisture longer into the summer.

Healthy soils act like a sponge, absorbing winter rains and releasing moisture slowly throughout the growing season. Landscapes with healthy soil often remain greener and less stressed during drought conditions than landscapes with compacted or degraded soils.
When we plant native species, we are supporting an entire ecological network that contributes to long-term resilience.
While some native plants, such as Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, and Yew, can be highly flammable, many native species naturally produce less hazardous fuel loads than commonly planted ornamental alternatives. Many native shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers maintain higher moisture content and contain lower concentrations of highly flammable volatile oils and resins. Species such as Kinnikinnick, Coastal Strawberry, Evergreen Huckleberry, Sword Fern, and native grasses generally do not accumulate the same volume of dead material as many invasive or highly combustible ornamentals.
In contrast, ornamental plants such as Holly, Pampas Grass, and dense Arborvitae hedges can create significant fire hazards due to their structure, volatile oils, or accumulation of dry material. The goal is not simply to plant native species, but to strategically select and arrange plants that reduce wildfire fuels and maintain ecological value.
Native plants work best when integrated into a design that considers how fire moves through a property and how the landscape can help slow its spread.

One of the greatest strengths of native plants is that they support biodiversity, require fewer resources, and help create landscapes that are better adapted to our changing climate.
By incorporating native plants into our gardens, we are not only supporting pollinators and wildlife. We are creating landscapes that are healthier, more resilient, and better prepared for the climate challenges that lie ahead.
